Chronicle

2012 is definately the year of the superhero and although I of course can't fucking wait for the likes of The Avengers and The Amazing Spiderman it's always good to see a different take on things coming through. As Spideys Uncle Ben famously said "with great power comes great responsibility" and that is the theme running through Chronicle. Now I'm sure that many of you will have heard that this is another shaky camera film and will no doubt think fuck this I don't want to see another Blair Witch or Cloverfield. Let me put you straight from the fucking off..... this is a very fucking good film and well worth your time and it's a little bit different. Of course my job now is to explain why. First off though let's have a little story.

Chronicle focuses on school loner Andrew Detmer who attends school whilst at home dealing with a sick mother and an abusive alcholic father. His only real solace is in his popular cousin Matt who to a certain degree offers him some protection from the school bullies. After talking Andrew into attending a party where due to the fact he films everything school sports star Steve asks him to film a 'discovery' that he has made. Steve shows both him and Matt a strange hole which of course they all go down. It's that film classic isn't it? Why the fuck do people want to investigate things that are without doubt fucking dodgy? Saying that people do that in real life as well. We're either curious or real fucking stupid. Bit of both I think. Once in said hole they find a strange glowing object which is vibrating and omitting noise. Why not touch it? Well that was fucking clever as our three friends wake up some time later with a new and weird feeling. That's right folks it's powers all round.

Unlike some comic book heroes these powers aren't quickly adapted and our would be heroes slowly play with their powers as they lift small items and throw a baseball at each other. Over the coming weeks their powers grow and I won't give you loads of details but it's all pretty fucking cool and at times funny. As in most tales like this you need a bad guy and if you give power to the guy who's spent his life being beat down then there is bound to be a certain amount of resentment. You know he's going to eventually give his dad a pasting but when it comes you can't help but fucking cheer. As I stated right at the start great power etc and although two of our central characters seem to be able to maintain their new powers Andrew seems to be all consumed by his and his power grows to catastrophic proportions.

I'm not going to reveal all as Chronicle is most definately worth your time and money and although you may think with the flooding of the cinematic market of superheros that you really can't be fucking arsed with anymore but believe me Chronicle is the right side of fucking good to only just miss out on being aesome. After last years Super 8 and now this maybe there is room in the market for the hand held camera film. Chronicle is nearly a very original idea and plays well throughout with the ending a bit fucking cool and asking you that question "would you kill your best friend to save many?". For me it would depend on who the many were. Don't be afraid I'm in therapy for it. It's also wort mentioning that Chronicle was made for not a great deal just going to prove that big bucks aren't needed for class. Makers of Green Lantern please take fucking note!

If I had A Super Power I would fly out of 5
