Kill Bill Vol 1 - BluRay Review

So as promised here is my first BluRay review. I've had a player for awhile now but to be honest haven't been arsed to use it so with my trusty credit card I went and brought a shitload of films on BluRay and am now truly fucking converted. In these reviews (they'll be a couple a month) I'll give you the normal type review of the film plus a little bit of shit on the extras and the image quality. As I don't hide I am a bit of a Tarantino fan so what better way to kick it all off than with Kill Bill Vol 1. As a lover of Asian cinema this to me is the ultimate homage to all those fucking great films that have come out from the likes of Japan and Hong Kong over the years.
Kill Bill tells the story of the Bride (Uma Thurman) who awakens after a four year coma hell bent on revenge on those who put her there. She was once a member of an elite band of assassins but after leaving was hunted down and left for dead on her wedding day. As she begins the hunt for the members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad and their elusive leader Bill (David Carradine), Tarantino tells the tale in chapter form (as he often does) and the narrative jumps around from story to story taking in her various battles with each assassin and her recovery from the coma. As can be expected from Tarantino there is lots of great dialogue and tremendous fucking violence.
As I mentioned earlier the nods to Asian cinema is throughtout but he also gives us a bit of Grindhouse,
exploitation and spaghetti western but volume 1 is generally about the Far East. There is of course the obvious such as Umas Game Of Death yellow and black suit and the great Japanese Anime sequence telling the back story of O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu) but unless like me you're a martial arts film fanatic you may not know who the likes of Sonny Chiba or Gordon Liu are. You've probably never heard of female samurai revenge film Lady Snowblood and haven't a fucking clue what Shadow Warriors is but it doesn't fucking matter because Tarantino may use every genre influence going to make his films but he rarely alienates his audience and although I obviously get an extra sad pleasure from my expansive film knowledge those virgins amongst you will still enjoy this good old fashioned revenge film.
HD Transfer
So is it worth investing in the BluRay? Well for me fucking hell yeah! The picture is stunning which is shown to its full extent in the showdown with the Crazy 88 gang and her final confrontation with O-Ren Ishii on a snow covered rooftop. There's definately something about snow that looks fucking amazing in HD. The colours shine through throughout and the Rza produced soudtrack sounds better than it did at the cinema. Every sword clash, limb sever and blood spray shot from my speakers and made me almost cum in my pants but then I'm easily pleased! So on that alone and if you have the right equipment it's definately worth your money.
Extras
A real fucking disappointment here to be honest. A short "making of" and a selection of trailers and music videos make for a really fucking shit selection. There's not even a commentry on it. Now I'm not that big into extras anyway unless I'm visiting Miss Ping Yongs Massage parlour but considering the capabilities of the BluRay disc it's a shame that this isn't jam packed full of them. My Region 1 DVD versions were packed with extras so I just don't get it. So if you're one of those people who loves all those commentries etc then this isn't for you but if you love the film then fucking spend your money!

I love this fucking idea! So many times I buy a blu-ray just to find out there's fuck all extras....what's the point!
Good work D-Man!
I'd like to see a Bluray - but not worth it with my non-HD tv :(
Glad you like it Snake it's something new for us plus it's a great excuse to review some older films. Poor Jimmy has life been cruel to you?
Fucking cool films.
But where is my JP and my fucking Aliens Blu-Ray cunt goblins? huh?!
I had to get DOTD2004 from the bloody states.
Theres meant to be a big fuck off Alien boxset coming out but it's whether its worth buying if you already have it on DVD. I'm not sure but we'll see.
I already have the 4 film box set, but a Directors Cut 1080p Aliens stuffed full of extras?? mmmmmmm
That's the thing though I think the extras will be the same. it's due out around the time Avatar hits although I have to agree a Directors Cut of Aliens in HD has me a little aroused!
