Shutter Island

I've never been a Leonardo DiCaprio fan. I don't know why exactly but maybe its because the women fucking love him or he seems to get away with growing the worst fucking bum fluff beards and people accept it as a mature performance. I think what really fucking irritates me about him though is the fact that he's in some really fucking good films. What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Quick And The Dead, Blood Diamond, Romeo And Juliet, The Basketball Diaries and of course Critters 3-You Are What You Eat are just a few films he's starred in but it's his collaborations with Scorcese that have really brought the best out in him. The likes of Gangs Of New York and The Departed showed him in a new light and Shutter Island I have to say is probably his best performance to date.
Di Caprio plays Special Agent Teddy Daniels who along with partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) is sent to investigate the escape of a dangerous patient from a mysterious mental asylum on Shutter Island. Teddy has been pushing to get an assignment on Shutter Island for personnel reasons and as he battles with his own demons his investigating skills begin to uncover that the doctors and staff are carrying out radical treatments which in some cases are just fucking sinister. He and his partner are refused access to the hospitals medical records and Teddy begins to wonder if he's actually been brought there as part of their whole diabolical plotting. As a hurricane rips through the island and Teddy and his partner become trapped there and he starts to doubt his own memories and his sanity is pushed to it's very limits.
The great thing about Shutter Island is the performances from the supporting cast. From Kingsleys Dr Cawley and sinister ex Nazi Dr Naehring played by Max Von Sydow to Michelle Williams as Teddys dead wife Dolores. Ruffalo stands toe to toe with DiCaprio throughout and I was impressed with his ability. My one complaint is an underused Jackie Earl Haley as patient George Noyce but that's just me being fucking bias because I loved him as the comedian in Watchmen.
Now that's as much of the story as I'm going to reveal because this is the second good film I've seen in a week and that doesn't happen very fucking often now does it? Shutter Island twists and turns and is probably one of Scorceses most accomplished films to date. Unlike his gangster films of the past he uses alot of imagery throughout which mainly fit around Teddys memories of being in the war and the loss of his wife in a fire. There is very little fucking point in me sitting here and writing alot about this film and with so many good films hitting cinemas at the moment why should you spend your hard earned cash on this? Well it's simple really.... if you don't then you don't deserve eyes and are probably one of those fuckers who queued at midnight to get a copy of New Moon on DVD. I hope you all wake up tomorrow with some strange tropical disease that devours you from the fucking inside. And on that note I'll say this. Just fucking watch Shutter Island it's fucking good.

I second that - the performances are fucking outstanding! I would give this 4/5 but that's because I read the book beforehand (which is excellent and can almost be read in the same time as watching the film), so annoyingly I knew what was going to happen, but that's my fault. Saying that, it's a great adaption and the haunting soundtrack was fucking spot on.
I loved this. I thought it was really tense throughout. Great soundtrack, subject, looks, acting and bloody scary in places. I wish all horror was like this.
The only disappointment was that I got the twist in the first half hour.
I think it's difficult nowadays to do a twist you don't see coming. We're all so fucking cynical nowadays and within a few minutes you start to question everything. Still a damn fine film.
So what's the verdict, book first? or should I stop being a fag and just watch the film?
Watch the fucking film and enjoy!
