I think we all know by now my opinion of remakes and in particular those of the horror variety. I'm just sick of watching step by fucking step copies of old films in shiny digital with pretty boy male leads and would fuck it but wouldn't want a conversation with actresses. Now Red Mist or Freakdog as it's called in the States is the new film from Paddy "Shrooms" Breatnach and although has obviously stolen ideas from past horrors (it has to be done, fuck me people have been writing this shit for hundreds of years, of course the well will run dry) mainly I Know What you Did Last Summer and Patrick as my fellow writer the Snake pointed out at least in the current divulge of remake shite its a bit fucking different.

The film opens with the obviously slightly deranged Kenneth (Andrew Lee Potts) in the hospital morgue as he films a corpse and has flashbacks of his prostitute mother being beaten to death by one of her clients. All rather pleasant I thought. Reminded me a little of Mary Poppins. Obviously thats not true as Mary Poppins is far more fucking disturbing. Don't agree then watch it and listen to Dick Van Dykes accent! Kenneth then promptly takes a scalpal and cuts his stomach. This boy has taken self harming to a whole new fucking level. A group of medical students are being trained and afterwards decide to go out partying not knowing that Kenneth is filming them. When at a bar Kenneth asks to walk home Catherine (Arielle Kebbel) although she is generally kind in letting him down the rest of the group mock him and as he feels the rage building inside he reveals he has video of them stealing from the hospital pharmacy. They convince him to join the party and when a prank goes very wrong Kenneth ends up in a coma.

 Upon hearing that they're going to turn off his life support Catherine decides to inject him with a combination of experimental drugs (bit like myself in the early 90's). After initially flatlining Catherine doesn't realise that she has now given him the ability to leave his body and possess others. Of course this leads to a killing spree on those who did him wrong. As they are picked off one by one Catherine begins to realise what may be happening. Can she stop him in time or will Kenneth get his bloody revenge?

It is obvious that I am a horror fan and I'm glad to say that apart from a bit of dodgy acting and scripting this wasn't bad. Now I can't honestly tell you wether that's because I was just really fucking happy that I wasn't watching My Bloody Bollocks 3D or Prom Shite but at least it felt interesting. Red Mist is far from perfect and is by no means the best horror film ever but it did show a bit of promise and was definately better than 2 weeks in a caravan in Great Yarmouth. A lovely little twist towards the end adds to the feel of the film and it didn't rely on those trademark jumps and scares for thrills. So all in all a very watchable little film and come on Arielle Kebbel is hotter than wearing a buffalo hide suit in the Sahara.
