Law Abiding Citizen

There are two ways in which you can choose to watch Law Abiding Citizen. You can watch it as some kind of social commentary on the failure of the justice system which is maybe how the film maker wants you to watch it or you can watch it as I believe it to be, a good action thriller that says very fucking little about the justice system. If you want to watch it the first way may I suggest watching Harry Brown instead or just stop being a pretentious twat. If you watch it my way then I guarantee you will enjoy it much more than if you take it seriously. One thing is for certain though and that's it deserves its 18 certificate as it's very fucking violent.

The story opens up with a picture of family bliss as Clyde (Gerard Butler) chats to his daughter and his wife makes dinner. A knock at the door interrupts proceedings and as Clyde answers he is hit with a baseball bat and a violent and nasty home invasion takes place which results in the murder of his spouse and child. the perpetrators are caught and when district attorney in the making Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) cuts a deal with one of them it means one goes to Death Row whilst the main bad muthafucka is released in five years. This of course does not please Clyde one little fucking bit. Fast forward ten years and a nasty rigged execution takes place. As police hunt down the other one involved in the murders he is captured by Clyde and tortured and cut into tiny little pieces. Clyde is arrested, jailed and so begins a game of cat and mouse as Clyde begins to kill all the Justice Department members involved in the case. He seemingly does all this from his jail cell.

Now maybe I'm just a big kid at heart but I really fucking enjoyed LAC (that makes it sound like a constipation relief medicine) and if you like the occasional silly thriller then LAC fits the bill. It is in places quite inventive and despite the fact the last twenty minutes or so are a little fucking ridiculous it matters not if you take it all with a pinch of salt and after the sobering viewing that was The Road it was the perfect tonic. Jamie Foxx is his usual overacting self but Butler is great as the pissed off father and husband who feels justice must be done. It helps that he just happens to be an ex-government agent with very special skills and I'm not saying he can make a good soufflé. It's loud, violent and stupid but there's nothing wrong with that every so often.

LAC won't win any fucking awards anytime soon but if you're after the perfect Friday night film then you could do much worse just don't expect anymore than that. As he takes out people the ways become more inventive and more out there but the running time passed by quickly and I wasn't bored which in my world is a good thing as 80% of what I end up watching can out run it's enjoyment rapidly. Want my advice? Get some mates together, have a few beers and then watch LAC. I promise you won't be disappointed. Thriller of the year? I doubt it but it's better than shaving with a chainsaw and you'll look at mobile phones differently afterwards.

A Load Of Bollocks But Fun Ones out of 5
