Robocop review

Detroit, sometime in the near-future. The police have been privatized and are now controlled by the OCP corporation. Police officer, Alex Murphy (Peter Weller), encounters a ruthless gang of cop-killers on his first day who torture him and leave him for dead. Murphy’s lifeless body is reconstructed and brought back to life as a half-man, half-machine, all cop – Robocop. Released onto the streets, Robocop quickly cleans up Detroit, but problems arise when he begins to hunt down Murphy’s killers, a trail that leads all the way back to the corrupt corridors of OCP.

Directed by Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Starship Troopers), Robocop is a sort of western version of the story of Jesus, that’s if Jesus had been covered in titanium, had big fucking gun and ate baby-food. The story of this sci-fi/western isn’t particularly original. What makes this film the fucking nuts is its attention to detail. Even now, 23 years on, the special effects by Rob Bottin (The Thing) are brilliant, the fake TV ads for nuclear-bomb based board-games and synthetic hearts are fucking hilarious and help to create a world that is totally believable, one that we aren’t so far away from now.

Robocop is brutally violent, darkly comical and at times exceedingly gory. Its attempts at satire and social commentary, while not particularly sophisticated, are extremely affective. Violent, bloody and funny as fuck, Robocop is by far one of the best films of the 80s. If you haven’t seen it I pity you and you’re probably one of those idiotic people I hate! Get it on DVD and stop being such a fucking loser! And with The Wrestler’s director, Darren Aronofsky, currently in pre-production on a re-imaging/remake, there’s no better time.

"I'd buy that for a dollar" out of 5.
