Is Death Race a remake of Death Race 2000 - Jason Statham

Is If you haven't seen Death Race 2000 then you should fuck off now and die horribly. In 1975 this was Paul Bartel's vision of the year 2000, street races where 'hit n run is no longer a felony'. The film is fucking genius and stars with Sylvester Stallone as Machine Gun Joe Viterbo.

Now shit film addict Jason Statham is set to star in Death Race which I was led to believe was a remake but the summary I have read at Coming Soon.net does not sound like the carnage of the original film, what the fucking fuck???

Though I probably should not be bothered as it would probably have been wank anyway.
