Jake West

Yeah sorry for the delay - I've been going to lots of film festivals- Sweden (Fantastik Film Fest), Germany (Fantasy Film Fest), America (Fantastic Fest) and Spain (sitges) and been out the country for a bit.

1. Ok dude thanks for answering some questions. First off what made you get into the film business?

I loved films as a kid and was lucky both my parents love movies too so I was fortunate and got taken to the cinema alot. Back then I had no idea how films were made but I knew theer was something fucking magical about them so I was intrigued to know more and read books and magazines and whatever info I could get. I didn't have any contacst or rich parents so I was basically stuck having to figure out stuff for myself and then in the mid 80's camcorders were invented and I spent a tear and half working and saving money to buy one so as a teenager I started making my own movies with my mates on video and it went from there. Once you're addicted it's a hard expensive fucker of a drug to shake. Basically I fucking love cinema and am completely obsessed with it.

2.Your obviously a hard working fucker because like Adam you seem to do all your own shit. Is it more rewarding as a film maker to see the end product that way?

Yeah I guess I ended up doing all my own shit really because of the way I learnt to make films in the earliy days - I had to know how to do everything as I mostly never had any proper crews - because I had no cash (though fortunatley that has changed now that I'm finally getting some decent budgets). In some ways it's rewarding because you do get to do things exactly the way you want - in other ways it was frustrating because I often felt I was stretching my meagre resources a little to thin. But necessitity is the mother of creation so in the long run having these kind of restrictions makes you stronger and keeps you hungry as real  knowledege and experience is power and I feel it's far better to have a rounded understanding of all the mechanics of the business of film (which is a cuntish mine field) and now I'm beginning to be able to hopefully use that to my advantage.

3.I fucking love Evil Aliens. It's got everything in it. Sex,violence, the blackest of comedy and of course mean mother fucker aliens. Where the fuck do you get your ideas from?

That's probably the hardest question to answer. Maybe I'm just a sick bastard....a with "Evil Aliens" I specifically wanted to pay homage to the movies I  loved as an adolscent teenager (Evil Dead, Brain Dead, Phatasm etc)  so I basically came up with every super crazy idea I could specifically about killing Aliens and humans in a Farm based environment, it was thinking about what potential weapons you could discover in such a scnerio that got me to that Eureka moment for the Combine Harvester Set piece. Though I also had a bunch of other completely insane bizarre ideas that I just couldn't afford to realise on the budget I had - maybe some of that stuff will get to see light another day!

4.You've worked with Emily Booth twice now. Not being funny but how fucking hot is that woman?
Seriously fucking hot and she loves horror! She's great fun and a dream to work with. Now you're even more insanely jealous right. I'm seeing her next week so I'll let her know - maybe you should interview her too?

5.I definately see the touches of Raimi and early Jackson (Peter not Michael) in your work. Who would you say are your biggest influences?
Yeah definitely Michael Jackson HAHA. No you pretty much nailed it though I'd have to add Sergio Leone in as he's a huge influence on my style - and  one day I would love to do a Spaghetti style Western.

6.Favourite horror films?
Too many to mention but here's a few: Evil Dead Series, Phantasm Series, The Thing, Alien, Suspira, Texas Chainsaw, Exorcist, Brain Dead etc.

7.You've just done Frightfest. Any thing really catch the eye?
Yeah I  loved Trick 'R Treat - amazing - and even more amazing that the wankers a warners fucked up royally by not releasing it theatrically. Still I guess they'd prefer us all to see bullshit remakes and re-imaginings instead right?

8.I interviewed Terry Stone the other day and he told me Doghouse was fucking great fun to make. It looked like a right laugh but there must be a serious side to film making. Do you work like a dog when you've a film to do?
Yeah Terry's great and  working with the guys & gals on  Doghouse was great fun because I got to work with some really exciting acting talent and had a bunch of great gals like Emily Booth hanging out in Zombie makeup. Plus oit's the best crew I've ever worked with so they made doing the job a pleasure. Yeah actually when I'm Directing I do have to work like a dog and in some ways I have the least "fun" job on the shoot from a socialising perspective - it's much more a blast for the Cast and most of the crew - at the end of  a shooting day they get to play whereasI have so much stuff to prep for the next day so can't get involved in that side as much. But that's a small price to pay to be making my film!

9.So tell me what's next for Jake West. Your films are getting more and more popular and your attracting some talent. Is it Hollywood next for you?
I'm working on putting together another few exciting projects with Doghouse writer Dan Schaffer - not sure which one will go first and I don't want to jinx it - but I'll post details on my web site when we have the bastard financing sorted. I haven't been invited to Hollywood yet, I haven't even got an agent. Maybe they're scared of me despite my fims being popular and making money!

10.You're obviously slightly twisted so what do you think of the site and have you a message for our readers?
Be yourselves and follow your own instincts. (so in a sense don't take my advice - HA HA.)

No films. This takes up enough time as it is. Non paid work is a bitch.
